What are your options for correcting uneven teeth?

Uneven teeth can mean several different things: crooked or crowded teeth, teeth of different lengths, chips, or gaps. Each problem has its own best solution, so the first step is finding out what is causing the unevenness.

Teeth that are crooked or crowded

Moving teeth is the usual answer when the problem is alignment.

  • Braces move teeth with brackets and wires and suit a wide range of cases, including complex ones.
  • Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, straighten many mild to moderate cases with removable trays.

Compare them in Invisalign and braces. Adults can be treated too. See orthodontics for adults.

Teeth that are chipped or worn

  • Dental bonding uses tooth-colored resin to repair small chips and rebuild edges, often in one visit.
  • Veneers cover the front surface of a tooth to restore its shape and color.
  • Crowns protect and rebuild teeth that are badly broken or weakened.

Teeth that differ in length or shape

  • Enamel contouring, which gently reshapes a tooth surface, can smooth minor irregularities in some cases.
  • Gum contouring can balance a "gummy" look when the gum line is uneven. Gum health is checked first.
  • Veneers or bonding can even out size and shape.

Gaps between teeth

Gaps can be closed with braces, aligners, bonding or veneers. Which is best depends on the cause and whether the bite needs correcting too.

Why a proper diagnosis matters

Uneven teeth can be caused by crowding, a bite problem, tooth wear from grinding, gum recession, or past injuries. If the cause is grinding or a bite issue, a cosmetic fix alone may not last. Your dentist can tell which treatment, or combination, makes sense.

How to choose

  1. Ask your dentist what is causing the unevenness.
  2. Compare conservative options first, because they preserve more natural tooth.
  3. Consider how long you want the result to last and how much maintenance you accept.
  4. Ask about the order of treatment. Straightening before cosmetic work is often best, as explained in straightening before veneers.
