Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to move teeth a little at a time. Many people choose it because it is discreet and comfortable. Here is what clear aligners can usually treat and where their limits are.
Problems Invisalign can often treat
- Crowded teeth, when there is not enough room for every tooth
- Gaps between teeth
- Overbite, when the upper front teeth overlap the lower ones too much
- Underbite, when the lower teeth sit in front of the upper ones
- Crossbite, when some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth
- Open bite, when the front teeth do not meet when the back teeth close
- Minor relapse, when teeth have shifted after earlier orthodontic treatment
How well aligners work depends on how much the teeth need to move and on how consistently the aligners are worn.
When braces may be the better choice
Some cases involve complex tooth movements, severe rotations or significant jaw problems, and traditional braces can give more control. A good orthodontist will tell you honestly when braces are the better fit. See our comparison of Invisalign and braces.
Who can be treated
Teens and adults can be treated with aligners if their teeth and gums are healthy. Gum disease and untreated cavities are addressed first. Aligners are not right for everyone, so an exam is the only way to know.
What the treatment involves
- Consultation and exam, with X-rays and photos
- A custom plan that explains how your teeth will move and the estimated time
- A series of aligners, each worn for a set period, usually for most of the day
- Regular check-ins to track progress
- Retainers after treatment to keep your new smile in place
Habits that matter
- Wear the aligners as directed, usually 20 to 22 hours a day
- Take them out to eat and drink anything other than water
- Brush before putting them back in, and clean the aligners
- Keep your retainers after treatment, because teeth can drift back
Be careful with mail-order aligners
At-home kits skip the in-person exam that checks your gums, bite and bone. Read about mail-order aligner risks.
