If you are thinking about dentures, the first step is a conversation and an exam. You do not need to have everything figured out before you call. Here is how the process usually goes.
Step 1: Schedule an exam
At your first visit your dentist reviews your health history, looks at your teeth, gums and jaw, and takes X-rays. This shows which teeth can be saved, which need to be removed, and how healthy your gums and bone are.
Bring a list of your medications, your insurance card if you have one, and any questions you have written down.
Step 2: Talk through your options
Dentures are one of several ways to replace missing teeth. Your dentist can explain:
- Full dentures, if most or all teeth are missing
- Partial dentures, if you want to keep healthy natural teeth
- Implant-supported options, which are more stable but involve surgery
- Bridges or implants for single gaps
Read our guide to dentures, implants and bridges to see how they compare.
Step 3: Treat what needs treating first
Healthy gums are the foundation for dentures. If you have gum disease, it is treated first (see gum disease treatment). If teeth need to be removed, your dentist plans the extractions and a healing period. Learn more on our tooth extractions page.
Step 4: Impressions and bite records
Your dentist takes impressions or scans of your mouth and records how your jaws meet. The lab uses these to make dentures that fit your mouth and suit your face.
Step 5: Try-in and final fitting
You may be able to preview the look and fit before the final dentures are made. At the fitting, your dentist adjusts the dentures so they are comfortable and your bite feels right.
Step 6: Follow-up visits
Expect to return for adjustments. New dentures often need small changes to remove sore spots as your mouth adapts. You will also get instructions for cleaning and caring for them.
Questions to ask at the first visit
- Which type of denture is a good fit for my situation?
- How long will the whole process take, including healing?
- What will it cost, and what do my insurance and financing options cover?
- What will daily care involve?
- How will I know if it needs a reline or repair?
