Are you a candidate for traditional veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of the teeth to improve color, shape and evenness. They are a long-term cosmetic treatment, so it matters that they are a good fit for you.

Signs you may be a good candidate

  • Your teeth and gums are generally healthy
  • You have enough enamel for veneers to bond well
  • You want to change color that whitening cannot fix, such as deep stains
  • You have chipped, worn or uneven front teeth
  • You have small gaps between teeth
  • Your teeth are slightly misshapen or short

When something else may come first

  • Active decay or gum disease. These are treated before any cosmetic work. See gum disease treatment.
  • Teeth grinding or clenching. Grinding can damage veneers. A night guard may be recommended.
  • Crooked teeth or bite problems. It can be better to straighten the teeth first. Read about straightening before veneers.
  • Very little enamel. Veneers need enough enamel to bond to.
  • Unrealistic expectations. A good dentist explains what veneers can and cannot do.

Veneers or other options?

Whitening brightens natural teeth, bonding repairs small chips with resin, and aligners move teeth. Veneers change color, shape and size at once. Our guide to veneers, whitening and bonding compares them.

What a consultation covers

  1. A conversation about what you want to change
  2. An exam of your teeth, gums and bite, with X-rays if needed
  3. A review of options and what to expect, including how much natural tooth may be removed
  4. A plan and written estimate before treatment begins

Things to think about

Veneers are long-lasting, but they are not permanent. If enamel is removed, the tooth will need a veneer or crown from then on, and veneers may need replacement over time. See how long veneers last.
