Fluoride treatment for adults and kids

Fluoride is one of the most studied tools for preventing tooth decay. In addition to fluoride toothpaste, dentists can apply professional fluoride treatments for people who need extra protection.

How fluoride protects teeth

Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps teeth resist acid. It also helps repair the earliest damage to enamel before a cavity forms. This is why fluoride works best when it is applied regularly in small amounts, and why it also supports teeth in adults.

What a professional treatment involves

A fluoride treatment is quick and painless. Your dentist or hygienist applies fluoride as a varnish, gel or foam to the teeth. Varnish is painted on, sets in seconds and is common for children. You may be asked to avoid hot drinks, hard foods and brushing for a short period afterward. Your dentist will tell you exactly what to do.

Who may benefit

  • Children with a higher risk of cavities, or whose permanent teeth are coming in
  • Adults with frequent cavities or new decay around existing fillings
  • People with dry mouth, because saliva normally helps protect the teeth
  • People with exposed root surfaces, such as with gum recession, which decay more easily
  • People wearing braces or other appliances that make cleaning harder
  • People with a history of gum disease

Not everyone needs it. Your dentist will decide based on your risk.

Fluoride at home

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Ask about a fluoride rinse or higher-strength toothpaste if you are at higher risk
  • Drink water, which in many communities contains fluoride

Fluoride is one part of prevention

It works alongside other habits: cleaning between your teeth, limiting frequent sugary snacks, and regular cleanings and exams. See how diet affects your teeth and preventing cavities in children.

Safety

Professional fluoride treatments use small, controlled amounts. Tell your dentist about your health history, and ask any questions about fluoride that you have.
