Types of Periodontal Treatments
Dental treatments that are used to reduce gum disease and its effects are often referred to as periodontal treatments. These types of treatments can reduce the damaging effects that gum disease has on gum tissue, teeth, tooth roots, and even bone tissue.
Non-surgical treatment methods for gum disease involve scaling and root planing. Plaque, tartar, and bacteria are removed from the tooth root below the gum line. Lasers are sometimes used in the performance of this procedure.
Gum grafts use donor tissue from another area to restore a receding gum line. Receding gums leave the tooth root exposed and can lead to tooth sensitivity, decay, or infection in the root area.
Regenerative procedures may be necessary to replace missing tissues. The dental provider will remove pockets of bacteria below the gum line and perform necessary procedures to stimulate or restore bone and tissue growth.
Pocket reduction procedures are necessary when the gum becomes too loose around the tooth and the ensuing pockets become too deep to properly clean at home. Once the bacterial buildup is removed, the dentist will secure the gum in place to allow proper healing.
Other periodontal treatment procedures include dental implants, crown lengthening, and various forms of periodontal plastic surgery.
