What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
An orthodontist is a dental specialist who completes additional training after dental school in moving teeth and aligning the jaws. A general dentist cares for your everyday oral health. Bijan Afar, DDS, MS
Founder & Periodontist / Implant Specialist
Dr. Bijan Afar is the founder of Noho Dental Group and a board-certified periodontist who has served the North Hollywood community for nearly three decades. He earned his DDS and a Master of Science in Oral Biology from the UCLA School of Dentistry, followed by a postgraduate research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Afar specializes in periodontics and dental implantology, guiding complex restorative and full-mouth reconstruction cases from surgical placement through final restoration. His approach combines evidence-based technique with a patient-first philosophy — every treatment plan starts with listening. Dr. Afar leads a multi-specialty team so that patients can complete their entire treatment plan in a single, familiar practice.

Orthodontics care in North Hollywood
When should you see an orthodontist?
For children. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check-up by age 7. Early visits help us spot problems while a child is still growing. Signs to watch for include crowded teeth, early or late loss of baby teeth, mouth breathing, thumb sucking and teeth that do not meet properly. What to expect from orthodontic treatment
- Consultation and records. We review your goals and health history, examine your teeth and bite, and take X-rays and photos.
- Treatment plan. Dr. Jacobson explains your options, the estimated treatment time and the cost.
- Active treatment. You come in for regular adjustments or check-ins to monitor your progress.

Orthodontic costs, insurance and financing
The cost of braces or Invisalign depends on the complexity of your case and how long treatment takes. Many dental plans include orthodontic benefits, usually with a maximum amount, and we will help you review yours. We also offer CareCredit financing.
