Tips for Better Gum Health

Tips for Better Gum Health

With more than half of the population aged 13 and over suffering from some form of gum disease, it is important to learn how to best take care of gums for good oral health.

Brush & Floss

It is important to brush and floss gently every day. Bad oral hygiene leads to gingivitis and periodontal disease which can erode gum tissue and even the bones in the jaw that hold the teeth. However, do not become overzealous, as harsh brushing can damage gums. An antibacterial mouthwash can help too.

Gum Massage

A gum massage can help increase circulation inside where the gum meets the tooth root for stronger and healthier gums. Your dental provider can recommend a solution to use while massaging or you may use a baking soda and water solution or green tea on a clean finger, being careful not to scratch the gum tissue with fingernails.

Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is important for a healthy mouth as well. Eat lots of vegetables and fruits for important nutrients, including folic acid and Vitamin C, as well as healthy oils and proteins. Limit sugary and acidic foods that can damage teeth and gums.

Dental Checkups

One of the biggest things you can do for healthy gums is to see your dentist for checkups twice a year. Our dentist in North Hollywood can examine your teeth and gums and remove excess plaque and tartar buildup. The dentist can also make recommendations on how to keep your gums healthy based on your exam.
