Possible Connection between Periodontal Disease and Breast Cancer

Gum disease is linked to some serious health issues. Our dentist in North Hollywood warns our patients that untreated periodontal disease is associated with cardiovascular disease, pregnancy complications and even dementia. A recent study has revealed that periodontal disease may also be linked to breast cancer.

The Karolinska Institutet in Sweden examined more than 3,200 women between 30 and 40 years of age. About half of the women were carefully examined for signs of gum disease. Those who had chronic gum disease accompanied by missing molars were statistically more likely to develop breast cancer. The incidence of breast cancer in women without periodontal disease and who had all their teeth was just under 2 percent. Those with missing molars and periodontal disease had a 5.5 percent incidence of breast cancer.

Periodontal disease often begins quite innocently. Women may notice swollen, inflamed gums, or their gums may bleed when they brush or floss. Addressing the condition at this early stage can help reverse it and prevent future damage. However, once periodontal disease advances, tooth and bone loss become considerably more likely.

The increased inflammation associated with periodontal disease may trigger more widespread inflammation. Although the exact link between periodontal disease and breast cancer continues to be unclear, the risks associated with periodontal disease are quite clear. Keep your gums healthy by brushing after meals, flossing every day and visiting our North Hollywood periodontist for professional cleanings and routine exams every six months.
