Periodontal Health for Better Diabetes Control
It is well-known that proper oral hygiene is important for healthy teeth and gums. It has been more recently discovered that oral health, specifically that involving the gums, can affect other areas of the body, often contributing to diseases and medical conditions. New reports now show that periodontal disease can also affect blood sugar control in diabetics.
Periodontal disease occurs when the gum line is exposed to plaque and bacteria, which can get underneath the gum line to damage gums and tooth supportive structures. Once under the gum line, bacteria can travel to other areas of the body. This bacteria has been associated with diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and even Alzheimer's disease.
For diabetics, periodontal gum disease is a common occurrence. Diabetics with poor blood sugar control are at a higher risk for developing infections such as gum disease as immune response is decreased all over the body.
In addition, it is now understood that periodontal disease makes it harder for diabetics to control their blood sugar levels. The bacteria responsible for periodontal gum disease also make it harder for the body to use insulin, often resulting in a level of insulin resistance for the diabetic.
