Oral Health Care for Patients with Endocrine Disease

Those with certain types of endocrine disease may be at risk for other health problems within the body, including those that affect the teeth and gums.

Those with diabetes have an increased risk of tooth decay, periodontal gum disease and development of infection such as abscesses or fungal infection such as thrush. Uncontrolled blood sugar can cause the bacteria in plaque to rapidly increase, making brushing and flossing especially important.Antibiotics may be given after surgical procedures to prevent infection.

Those with Addison's disease require steroids to balance their condition. In very few cases, dental procedures may increase the need for increased steroids either before or after the procedure.

Those with Cushing's Disease may require certain medications before dental intervention if it provokes excessive stress. Those with this syndrome may be more at risk for infection or cardiovascular collapse so special precautions are necessary.

Those with thyroid problems may have an increased risk of bleeding and reduced salivation. They may also need to receive alternatives to ephedrine in anesthesia and other treatments.

It is important for patients to notify their dentist of any current health conditions and medications because certain dental treatments may need to be adjusted to avoid risks and complications to the patient.
