Oral Health Care for Diabetics
Diabetics are at a greater risk for gum disease than non-diabetics. Our dentist suggests diligent at-home dental care and transparency when it comes to sharing medical information at regular dental exams.
People who have diabetes are more at risk for developing bacterial infections, including those that affect the gums. In fact, diabetics are twice as likely to develop gum disease as those who do not have this medical condition. While high blood sugar increases the risk of infection, serious infection can make diabetes harder to control. This makes it especially important for diabetics to use proper oral health care in addition to controlling blood sugar levels.
Brushing and flossing are still the most important home factors in oral health care, even if you have diabetes. Use a soft bristled toothbrush, and brush teeth twice a day. When brushing, use short, gentle strokes to clean all tooth surfaces. Do not forget to brush the gums and gum line. This helps remove plaque and bacteria from the gums to reduce the risk of gingivitis or more serious types of periodontal gum disease. To brush at the gum line, hold the toothbrush at about a 45 degree angle and brush away from the gums in a gentle, sweeping motion. Be sure to floss once a day as well.
Regular visits with the dentist are an important part of oral health care management. At your appointment, tell our dentist in North Hollywood that you have diabetes and any difficulties you have had with controlling blood sugar levels and any recent infections. The dentist can then make recommendations on your oral hygiene routine for the best oral health you can get.
