Oral Care for Men

Oral Care for Men

According to surveys and studies, men are less likely to tend to their dental health than women are. In fact, the average man brushes his teeth fewer than twice daily and loses more than five teeth by the time he reaches his 70s. Men who smoke have an even grimmer outlook: They are more likely to suffer from periodontal disease or develop oral cancer.

GOOD DENTAL HYGIENE

Men need to brush at least twice a day or after meals. This removes plaque and dangerous oral bacteria from their teeth. Flossing once a day can remove the plaque that builds up between their teeth and along the gumline. Removing plaque can help reduce your risk of gum disease and cavities.

REGULAR DENTAL CHECKUPS

Men need at least two checkups and professional cleanings every year. This gives our dentist an opportunity to evaluate your dental health, adjust your oral hygiene routine and provide treatment recommendations as necessary. If you take certain medications or have certain health conditions, we may recommend more frequent visits.

GOOD DENTAL HEALTH HABITS

Tobacco users are at a dramatically increased risk of developing gum disease and oral cancer, which can lead to facial and oral disfigurement, loss of function, pain and death. Quitting chewing or smoking tobacco may be one of the best things you can do for your dental health. If you are a weekend warrior or a dedicated athlete, take the time to wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth from trauma. Finally, eat a mouth-friendly diet. Whole grains, fresh produce and lean protein can all help your gums become more resilient to periodontal disease.
