Most Common Dental Health Problems

While dental problems can occur to anyone, they are more likely to occur in those who do not maintain proper oral hygiene and regular examinations with a dental care provider.

Cavities

Cavities, also referred to as tooth decay, occur as harmful plaque and bacteria erode the protective enamel on the tooth's surface. Cavities are not reversible but may be treated by a dentist. The decayed area is removed and filled with a strong and durable material to reduce further erosion of the tooth.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is caused by plaque along and under the gum line, leading to irritation, inflammation, and infection of gum tissue. This may result in exposed tooth roots, bleeding from the gums, and even erosion of tooth roots and bone tissue resulting in the loss of teeth and the need for replacements.

Tooth Staining

Tooth staining can occur from food and drink as well as improper oral hygiene. While there are genetic factors involved in darkness and appearance of teeth, especially during aging, teeth can remain whiter in most cases with proper oral health care. Our dentist can also provide or recommend whitening treatments for those with stains or discolorations that remain after home care.

To reduce your risk of common dental issues, be sure to brush twice a day and floss daily. Be sure to remember your twice a year exams with our North Hollywood dentist, who can make further recommendations based on your individual needs.
