Lumineers Compared to Veneers
Our cosmetic dentist in North Hollywood may be able to use dental veneers or Lumineers to correct a variety of cosmetic dental issues, including chips, stains and gaps. Many people are understandably confused about the differences between the two products, however. Both restorations are use thin shells of porcelain to cover the fronts of teeth and can be completed in just a few dental visits, and both traditional veneers and Lumineers should last for several decades with proper care.
TRADITIONAL DENTAL VENEERS
If you are a candidate for traditional veneers, your first visit will include any necessary prep work, which means that a layer of enamel will be removed, and dental impressions will be taken. These impressions will be used to make the new veneers, and they will be sent off to the dental lab while you will be sent home with temporary veneers to protect your teeth in the interim. When your new veneers are done, your teeth will be prepared, and the veneers will be bonded to the teeth. Traditional dental veneers can be used to correct the appearance of misaligned teeth, improve the appearance of small or misshapen teeth, fill gapped teeth or provide a whiter, more symmetrical look for a Hollywood smile.
LUMINEERS
The process for receiving Lumineers is quite similar, but you won’t usually need to have your teeth prepared because Lumineers are even thinner than traditional veneers. Because there is no preparation, shots will not be required and enamel will not be removed. The Lumineers can be placed directly over your teeth, and there is no need for temporaries. This process is completely reversible, so if you change your mind or if one of your restorations becomes damaged, you may have them removed. Lumineers can be used to treat most of the same cosmetic issues that traditional veneers treat.
