How to Prevent Periodontal (Gum) Disease
Many dental patients have never heard of periodontal disease, and may be surprised when an oral hygienist or dentist informs them they have it! In fact, half of all Americans aged 30 and older have periodontal disease, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and many are unaware. Noho Dental Group, a North Hollywood dental practice, has treated many patients for periodontal disease to improve their overall oral health. This may mean mild gingivitis, or inflammation of the gum tissue, or severe bone loss of the jawbone, which supports the teeth.
Noho Dental’s Periodontist and Implant Dentist, Dr. Bijan Afar, urges everyone to make sure they regularly floss, brush their teeth, and come in for regular check-ups and X-rays with their North Hollywood Dentist.
“It’s important to address periodontal disease, because not only does it greatly impact a patient’s appearance if their teeth start to fall out, it also causes irreversible bone loss and tissue damage,” Dr. Afar said. “What’s more, periodontal disease can lead to or worsen heart problems, diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer and more.”
In fact, the American Academy of Periodontology’s research has shown that having gum disease increases a person’s risk of getting heart disease, as well as strokes. When it comes to your gums, remember that it’s very important to keep them healthy and strong.
