Habits that Can Destroy Your Teeth

Habits that Can Destroy Your Teeth

We all like to keep our teeth looking their best, but there are some surprising things that can destroy your teeth. Our dentist in North Hollywood has shared a number of habits that you or your family might unknowingly be doing, and these habits can certainly destroy your teeth.

THUMB SUCKING

Though you may not suck your thumbs, your kids might. If your child sucks his or her thumb after they have their permanent teeth, they could certainly change the alignment of these teeth. Not only can this affect how the teeth come in, it could also change the shape of the jaw. Braces and other dental appliances will likely be needed if this continues.

EATING LEMONS OR OTHER CITRUS FRUITS

Citrus fruits, especially lemons, are extremely healthy thanks to their high level of vitamin C. However, if you suck on lemons or other acidic fruits, the protective enamel on your teeth will start to erode away. This leaves a new layer of your teeth exposed which can lead to cavities, decay, and sensitivity.

HYPER-BRUSHING YOUR TEETH

No one will deny that you need to brush your teeth, but if you are brushing too vigorously with a hard toothbrush, you could be damaging the enamel, just like when you eat acidic food like lemons. Always brush with a soft bristle toothbrush unless your dentist recommends another type of brush.

USING YOUR TEETH AS TOOLS

Finally, you will find that using your teeth as a tool can damage them. People will often use their teeth to open packages, open bottles, or to serve as a third hand when holding other objects. Make sure you do not do this as your teeth can chip and break.
