Good Candidates for Dental Implants
Most people who are missing one or more teeth and whose jaw is fully developed can have a dental implant procedure performed. However, there are some basic guidelines to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants.
Good health. Those with certain medical conditions may not be good candidates, depending on the severity of the condition. Additionally, those who take certain medications may not do well with implants.
Adequate bone in the jaw. There must be enough bone to support the implant. If there is not, additional procedures will be necessary before implants can be used.
Healthy gums. Excellent oral hygiene is necessary to keep implants from failing. There must be enough healthy gum tissue to hold the crown and a commitment to excellent oral hygiene for successful implants.
No tobacco, alcohol, or drug use. Smokers and those with substance abuse issues are encouraged to quit before trying to have an implant procedure. In order for implants to be successful, there must be a commitment to daily oral health care as well as necessary dental follow-ups. In addition, tobacco and other harmful substances may slow healing in the mouth, making it likely the implant procedure will fail.
