Dental Care During Pregnancy

Dental Care During Pregnancy

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Committee on Health Care for Underserved Women, dental care should be at the top of your to-do list during pregnancy. Many people believe that dental care during pregnancy can be harmful for the developing fetus, but research indicates that this is not the case. According to the committee, dental cleanings and X-rays are still very safe during pregnancy.

Unfortunately, as many as 40 percent of pregnant women have gum disease or cavities, and many of them have not seen a dentist in the previous year. Changes that occur during pregnancy can make this a dangerous situation. Increased blood flow and hormones can make gums more sensitive and vulnerable to infection. Also, frequent vomiting may create an acidic environment that erodes teeth and increases the risk of tooth decay.

Dental disease during pregnancy has been linked to miscarriage, low birth weight and premature birth. If you are pregnant, you may benefit from a more frequent dental exam and cleaning schedule. Frequent cleanings can reduce plaque and tartar buildup and keep your mouth healthier. You also want to brush your teeth at least twice a day. If you vomit, rinse with water and wait about 30 minutes before brushing to reduce enamel damage. If you develop a dental problem, local anesthesia and restorative cave such as dental fillings and root canals are generally considered safe during pregnancy.
