Connection between Dental Health and Risk of Dementia

Connection between Dental Health and Risk of Dementia

Researchers have found a link between oral hygiene and the development of dementia later in life. Those who take care of their teeth more and engage in proper oral health care have less risk of developing dementia and related conditions.

Individuals with poor oral hygiene habits are already at an increased risk for developing many other health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, and even diabetes. Now it appears that those who do not engage in proper oral health care practices have an increased risk of developing degenerative type brain disease as well.

Those who brush their teeth less than once a day are about 65 percent more likely to develop dementia than those who brush their teeth daily. Women seem to be affected more than men.

It was also discovered that those who were missing most or all of their natural teeth and who did not wear dentures were twice as likely as those who wore dentures or who had most or all of their natural teeth to develop dementia. This effect was seen more in men than in women.

Although good oral health can help reduce the risk of developing other serious health conditions, other factors may influence the development of disease in the body as well. This is why it is important to have regular examinations by your dental care provider. Our dentist in North Hollywood can help you to keep your oral health at its best.
