Common Causes of Tooth Pain
Many things can cause tooth pain. Most tooth pain will require professional treatment, so you will need to schedule a dental appointment. Once we determine the cause of your tooth pain, you should be well on your way to getting the relief you need.
The following is a list of different types of tooth pain and their causes:
1- Sensitivity to hot and cold – This is one of the most common types of discomfort and is usually linked to enamel erosion or gum recession. In most cases, it only requires the use of an anti-sensitivity toothpaste. If your case is severe or resistant to treatment, we may also recommend fluoride treatment or bonding to protect your exposed roots.
2- Pain with pressure – Several things can cause your tooth to hurt when you bite down, including a crack, a loose filling, or an untreated cavity. A filling, root canal treatment, or other procedure might be necessary to treat the problem and eliminate your pain.
3- Lingering pain after temperature changes – When you eat or drink something cold or hot and pain continues beyond a few seconds, this could indicate irreversible pulp damage and the need for endodontic therapy.
4- Constant, severe pain – You might have an infected or abscessed tooth, especially if the pain is accompanied by a persistent bad taste, swelling, and sensitivity. Antibiotics, root canal treatment, or other procedures may be needed to save the tooth.
5- A dull, aching pain – This could be caused by grinding or bruxism. Wearing a night guard can help cushion your teeth when you sleep and protect them against the damage of tooth grinding.
