Causes and Symptoms of Gingivitis
Your mouth is inhabited by millions of bacteria. While some of these bacteria are harmless, others are quite dangerous and have the potential to infect your gums and cause gum disease. Our North Hollywood dentist recommends taking a proactive approach in order to prevent gingivitis or treat it while it is in its earliest stage.
Oral bacteria make their home in dental plaque, a colorless, sticky film that develops on your teeth and around your gums throughout the day as you eat and drink. If this film is not regularly removed, the bacteria can produce acids that can damage the teeth and toxins that can irritate the gums. Plaque then hardens into a mineralized substance called tartar, which can only be removed through professional cleanings. Tartar further irritates the gums and provides bacteria with even more hiding places. In some cases, gingivitis may also be caused by hormonal fluctuations, diabetes or gum injury. If gingivitis is not identified and treated, periodontitis can develop, and your gums, teeth and jaws may suffer permanent damage.
Symptoms of gingivitis may be subtle at first. You may notice swollen gums that bleed when you brush or constant bad breath that leaves you reaching for gum. As the condition advances, your gums may recede from your teeth, which makes your teeth appear longer. Teeth can even become loose or shift.
