What Cosmetic Dentistry Can Do for You
Dentistry is no longer limited to filling cavities. Today, there is a whole branch of dentistry aimed at the aesthetic aspects of our smile.
Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the appearance of a smile. This is accomplished by removing visible defects in the teeth. Most dental issues can be corrected in any one of several ways. The specific treatment that is chosen depends on budget, time parameters and personal preferences of the patient. Here is a look at some of the most common treatments that are used in cosmetic dentistry.
Veneers
Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are placed on the front surface of teeth to hide imperfections such as chips, gaps and stains. They can also be used to change the shape of teeth or make them appear straighter.
Dental Implants and Bridges
Implants and bridges are used to replace one or more teeth that are missing. An implant consists of a post that is inserted into the jawbone to serve as the root of a missing tooth, allowing a false tooth, such as a crown, to be attached. A bridge is, essentially, a set of connected crowns that are anchored to the natural teeth on either side of the missing tooth, covering the empty space.
Teeth Whitening
These treatments use bleaching agents to lighten the color of natural teeth. They remove surface stains, and penetrate the surface of the teeth to remove deeper discolorations.
Gum Lifts
When the gumline is uneven or when too much of the gums show, a gingivectomy can be performed to remove a portion of the gums. This produces an even gumline and makes the teeth appear longer.
